Duke Ellington’s America

Duke Ellington Dreaming (Canadian Television, 1964)

When Ellington appeared on television outside of the United States, networks would give him long spaces of time to play music and speak his mind—here is a short example. I first saw this program at about two in the morning in the New York City apartment of Michael James, Ellington’s nephew, and it brought tears to my eyes. It’s more filmed evidence of Ellington’s addiction to and love for composing. Try to catch this entire show sometime if you can.
